Federal Way Head Start
Federal Way, WA

As part of a Federal Way youth and education complex, this Head Start Child Care Center is sited to allow for both intimate courtyard spaces and secure outdoor play areas on a busy campus. Cascade Design Collaborative developed the overall site design for the larger campus in addition to the landscape design of this Head Start facility. Using the Reggio Emilia concept of hands-on, art-based learning, the Child Care Center design provides flexibility and encourages interaction among the children and teachers. Students from the adjacent Truman Alternative High School utilize the Center as well.

Outdoor play spaces are filled with elements that provide opportunities for children to explore their natural environment. The design includes a hand pump for water play, tree fort, tricycle track, play deck, raised stage, garden plots and a large, low-branching tree for climbing. Plants such as lavender, rosemary and ornamental grasses stimulate the senses and add color. A community garden is located adjacent to the children’s play area.
